Two important components for successful comparator drug sourcing are 1) accessibility and 2) reliability – getting the drugs you need and ensuring supply continuity throughout your trial.
We have all experienced the fragility of supply chains. During the peak of the COVID-19 Pandemic, there were economic impacts, protective measures, and import/export bans limiting access to some drugs on the world market. Natural disasters such as tornadoes like the one that impacted a North Carolina Pfizer plant in 2023, flash floods, and hurricanes can stop production or destroy entire factories further disrupting supply chains. Or manufacturing problems that led to the shortage of the cancer drugs Cisplatin and Carboplatin. After a FDA inspection of a facility in India that did not go well, additional checks, a slow batch release and the stop of manufacturing led to a global shortage.
Shortages become a bigger problem – even after the pandemic phase of Covid is over. It is critical to have a partner who is aware of shortages, understands the challenges of drug sourcing and has forged strategic, time-tested ties with manufacturers to find alternatives.
